About Katherine
Why I teach
Yoga taught me that it's okay to fall growth comes from
getting back up. It really taught me that we are not defined by things that we
can or cannot do but with our approach, our view, our ability to have an open
mind and an open heart. It has taught me more to organize my life so that I
practice with curiosity and not to play around, to let go of hope and self
criticism. So this is why I teach! I am satisfied to watch students laugh when
they fall, try even though they might be afraid, and find things about
themselves on their mats that translate into their lives. I teach because yoga
is more than 60 minutes of physical exercise, it is self-discovery, it is
community, and growth.
Who am I?
I am unique, and awkward I have been on this side for a long
time and I am well aware that you really cannot fake something strange. When
I'm not teaching, I might be walking, sitting in the sun, or surrounded by
friends that makes me feel inspired & uplifted.
Katherine has been studying yoga since 2001 & has been
teaching since 2004. Philosophy and Universal Principles Alignment of the
method of Anusara Yoga has the greatest influence on Katherine's life, yoga
practice, as well as her teaching style, opening up the deepest experience
& understanding of the connection between spirit, mind, & body. It is
this understanding that drives his teachings, Katherine encourages her students
to remember the importance of having fun and how to play in the mind and body
that liberates the spirit. He has learned through experience that creating the
right harmony in the mind and body allows for freedom in the heart. Through the
strength of these very powerful teachings, Katherine's mild nature of life
which lived on her teachings encouraged others to do the same. Katherine is
also very at home in the water and really likes surfing. During the SwellWomen
retreat, Katherine will guide you through several asanas to strengthen the area
of the body needed for surfing, and open the most misused area when you are
on a surfboard. He hopes to see you on the mat and in the water!
MASSAGE ~
Katherine's love for the body & how she moves leads her
to the path of Sports Medicine & then explores the healing capacity of
massage therapy. The style and focus of Katherine's massage is based on the
right balance of movement, body mechanics, and connective tissue - fascia. The
"style" massage technique that he applied was most associated with
the Integrative Structural approach, he began this journey in early 2000 after
receiving a Bachelor's degree in Sports Medicine. He has a very broad knowledge
of the Musculo Skeletal body system and also educates his clients during the
session about the best way to maintain the body in optimal harmony. Katherine
always and will continue to be a student of body and mind. Marriage between
knowledge of massage and yoga practice creates a balanced, relaxed and
informative session. This is the only body we get in this lifetime, we need to
learn to be sensitive, listen, and be kind to our amazing ships!

What is
Scaravelli Inspired Yoga?
The style
of yoga that Catherine taught was inspired by the pioneering approach of Vanda
Scaravelli. This is a gentle and demanding form of yoga from Hatha yoga, which
focuses on developing core strength through releasing tension and also resulting
in length in the spine.
Scaravelli's
inspired yoga is stress-free yoga, which is very beneficial for everyone.
Classes suitable for all ages & all levels of yoga experience (beginner,
intermediate or advanced). Regardless of your fitness level, you will find a
longer, stronger and more flexible spine, a calmer mind, and begin to enjoy
increased energy and ease of movement.
It uses
breath and also gravity to allow the spine to be revealed like a wave, &
results in unstoppable opening to energize the entire body. As Vanda explained
on the opening page of her book "Awakening the Spine":
"There
is a division in the center of our back, where the spine moves simultaneously
in two opposite directions: from the waist down to the foot and also to the
foot, which is pulled by gravity, and from the waist up, through the top of the
head, lifting we are free ".
Vanda's
teachings are miraculously simple. He encouraged his students to do less, feel
more. To unwind, release unnecessary tension, and start easily. "You can
only cancel it. The more you cancel, the more you and more things come to you.
Don't try to be weak. "
Release
unnecessary tension & the importance of gravity
One of the
most important revelations about how this works came with the discovery of
deliverance. Some of the most pleasant sensations that we feel during yoga are
when we feel light and there is a feeling of grounding and releasing that
occurs when we break down the body and release unnecessary tension. Vanda
understands this, and focuses on only using position to allow stress to fall
from the body, giving in to the pull of gravity. Although this is a very simple
idea, the practice is more complex, bound, as it is, in our body history, the
way we inhabit our bodies, the work we do, and the way we react to physical,
emotional and psychological stimuli. . If you want to read more about gravity,
please see the fact sheet.
If we can
follow his advice & at least begin to recognize where we hold on, we may
begin to release tension from the body, let go, and uncover established grip
patterns. Once we arrange this process, our structure will naturally begin to
move more easily and smoothly, as happened when we were children.

Conformity
or postural and spinal problems
This
approach is very gentle, but demanding. We work in depth, but with
intelligence, so this practice increases our awareness, helps us make
sustainable, healthy & nutritious choices that will affect us or those
closest to us, at all levels - physical, psychological, and emotional. This is
very helpful for those who work with postural problems, lower back pain, stiff
neck and shoulders and for those who are stressed, and need space to learn how
to relax.
My yoga
trip
I have
never had the privilege when I met Vanda, but I have worked with many key
students. My first yoga class inspired by Scaravelli was taught by Alex Gray
(who is a student of Diane Long - he is a long-term Vanda student). At that
time, I had been practicing since 1978, and attending Sivananda, Iyengar,
Astanga - all kinds of classes, experienced as much as possible. Alex is
teaching elbow dogs, and that is revelation. I wanted to push into it, to
really "do" the pose, but he held me back and stopped me - and it
felt totally different. At first, I found this frustrating, because it felt as
if I could not "finish" the pose. At one level the sensation is far
more subtle and subtle - the complete antithesis for the familiar feeling of
working hard and "having a good stretch". But after a while I
discovered that Alex made me integrated. Instead of depending on my
flexibility, he made me work from the center, from within, involving myself in
that simple gesture. It was my first experience about the Vanda approach, and
it captivated me and kept bringing me back to find more.
