The Oregon Physical Therapy Association is one of the
branches of the American Physical Therapy Association which represents
approximately 100,000 physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, and
national physical therapy students and more than 1,700 physical therapists,
physical therapist assistants, and students in the country part of Oregon.

Oregon Physical Therapist Licensing Body Requirements
CE Requirements:
The PTs renewal cycle as well as the PTA takes place from
April 1 every even year, until on the 31st of March the next year. A 24-month
continuous competency certification period that lasts from April 1 every even
year, until the next 31 March.
CE: 24 hours of continuous competency for PT. Effective with
the current certification period dated 04/01/2014 - 03/31/2016, PTA now needs
to have approximately 24 hours of continuous competence to renew their licenses
for the license period starting April 1, 2016.
PT must meet only one-time pain management education
requirements: seven hours of pain management education, including completion of
a one-hour online pain management course sponsored and provided by the Oregon
Pain Management Commission, plus an additional six hours of continuing
education relative to pain evaluation, diagnosis or treatment. PTA is exempt
from pain management education requirements.

Oregon
Temporary
License Requirements / Availability
The board
can issue a temporary license or permit in a satisfactory application and also
the payment of the registration fee set by the board with the rules.
The
Licensing Agency for Physical Therapists, can issue without a temporary permit
examination to someone to practice as a physical therapist in this state if the
person submits a permit application and pays to the board when applying for a
temporary permit fee.
A person
who holds a temporary permit can practice physical therapy only under the
direction of a licensed physical therapist.
Someone
with a temporary permit (issued because they graduated from a CAPTE accredited
school in the U.S. state or territory and applied for a licensing exam for the
first time or were a foreign-educated physical therapist who had graduating
from a CAPTE accredited physical therapist program) must practice under
supervision in place, which means that at any time the supervisor's therapist
is in the same building and immediately available for consultation.
Someone who
holds a temporary permit issued because they hold a current license to practice
in another state or territory such as in the United States must practice under
general supervision, which means that at any time a supervisor therapist must
be prepared for consultation, both in person or through telecommunications.
Entries
made in the patient's record by the temporary permit holder must be authorized
by the permit holder and also by the supervisor therapist.
Temporary
licenses will be granted for a period of approximately three months. The board
can renew temporary permits at its discretion for an additional three months,
but no longer.
Requirements
for License
A license
is required to practice physical therapy. Unless someone is a licensed physical
therapist or has a permit issued by the board, someone may not:
Practice
physical therapy
Use in
connection with the person's name the words or letters, "PT",
"RPT", "LPT", "physical therapist",
"physiotherapist" or letters, words, abbreviations or badges
indicating that the person is a physical therapist, or claimed to be a physical
therapist.
Each physical therapist must show a copy of the physical therapist's
license or verify the extension at this time in a location that is publicly
accessible in the practice or physical therapist's work.
Extension requirements:
- All physical therapy assistant or physical therapy licenses expire on
March 31 each calendar year, regardless of the initial issue date. Physical
therapists and physical therapist assistants must renew their licenses annually
to practice effectively on April 1 each year. The license is considered
apostate if the complete update application is stamped or received after March
31. A person whose license has lapsed must immediately stop practicing as a
physical therapist or physical therapist assistant and may not practice until
the license is renewed.
- During the first week of January each year the Board will always send
renewal applications to each physical therapist and physical therapy assistant
licensed at the license holder's mailing address on the file with the Board.
- If the license renewal application that has been given a postmark or
is actually received by the Board after March 31, the license holder will be
subject to an invalid license extension.
- Licensed physical therapists must immediately complete the renewal
application form provided by the Board and pay the annual renewal fee.
- Every licensed physical therapist and physical therapist assistant
must complete the hours of continuing education on March 31 every even year.

Supervision
A physical
therapist's assistant must have direct supervision in place of a physical
therapist or physical therapist's assistant and carry out routine tasks of
prescribed and supervised physical therapy as determined by a physical
therapist or assistant.
Students of
Physical Therapy
A physical
therapist can allow a student's physical therapist (SPT) to provide care that
is consistent with the education, experience, and skills of each student.
At any
time, the physical therapist must provide supervision at the SPT site that
provides care to patients.
For the
purposes of this rule "supervising a physical therapist" means the
physical therapist responsible for patient care on the day of the SPT or SPTA
providing care.
For the
purposes of this regulation, "on-site supervision" means that at any
time, the physical therapist is in the same building and is immediately
available to provide direct direction, assistance, advice or instruction to
students.
Documentation
by physical therapists of SPT students must be validated on the same day by
students and by a physical therapist guide.
