Risk and causes
There are several factors that can increase the risk for developing mesothelioma, which will be explained below. But having one of these risk factors does not mean you will get cancer.

Asbestos
We know that asbestos affects most of the cases of pleural mesothelioma. The risk is greater if you are exposed to very large amounts of it for a very long period of time. Many people with mesothelioma in the stomach (peritoneal mesothelioma) are also exposed to asbestos.

Relationships with mesothelioma & asbestos were only known in the 1960s. Unfortunately, the number of mesothelioma cases in the UK each year is expected to increase sharply over the next few years. This is because the use of asbestos in the industry began at the end of the second world war until the mid-1970s.

Mesothelioma is a cancer that is quite rare, and is estimated in the United Kingdom, approximately 9 to 10 men with mesothelioma, and more than 8 out of 10 women with this type of cancer have made contact with asbestos. But some people with mesothelioma say they have no history of asbestos exposure.

What is asbestos?
Asbestos is one of the heat and fire resistant insulation materials. The use of asbestos was banned in 1999 in the United Kingdom. It is widely used in:

- building industry
- shipbuilding
- manufacture of household appliances
- motorcycle industry
- power plants
- telephone exchange

There are three main types of asbestos, namely blue, brown and white. Blue and brown asbestos is strongly associated with mesothelioma and has been banned in the UK since the late 1980s. White asbestos is now also considered dangerous.

How does asbestos cause mesothelioma
Asbestos is made of small fibers. You can breathe these fibers when coming into contact with asbestos.

Fiber works by entering the pleura that lines the lungs. They irritate the pleura and can also cause gene changes (mutations) that lead to cancer growth. Some fibers can cough and be swallowed. This may be the cause of peritoneal mesothelioma.

There is some evidence that families of people exposed to asbestos have a higher risk of mesothelioma because asbestos fibers can be taken home with clothes.

The highest risk group
Mesothelioma is most common in those who are exposed to asbestos at work, for example, they have:

- works in manufacturing using asbestos
- used asbestos products, especially in construction or engineering
- This can be in various jobs including metal plate workers (especially in shipbuilding), carpenters, plumbers and mechanics.
- Smoking also increases the risk of cancer in people who have been exposed to asbestos.

SV40 virus
Research has looked into a virus called the SV40 virus (SV stands for simian virus) but there is not enough evidence to show infection is associated with the risk of mesothelioma.

In people who have been exposed to asbestos, contact with the SV40 virus can cause it more likely that they will develop mesothelioma. So SV40 is considered a possible co factor. But this is not entirely clear.

Some people in the UK and elsewhere were exposed to the polio vaccine contaminated with the SV40 virus between 1955 and 1963.

Radiation
Pleural & peritoneal mesothelioma has been shown to develop after exposure to radiation from thorium dioxide chemistry (Thorotrast). This chemical was used until the 1950s in several x-ray tests.

Several research studies have shown an increased risk of mesothelioma in people treated with radiotherapy for cancer earlier. But other studies show no increased risk. If radiotherapy does increase the risk of mesothelioma, this might occur in only a few people.

Other chemicals
Working as a painter has been associated with an increased risk of mesothelioma, maybe because chemicals are painted, or on the job site.

Minerals similar to asbestos called erionite have been found to increase the risk of mesothelioma in Turkey, but this has not been found in populations elsewhere.

Other possible causes
Stories about the potential causes of cancer often exist in various media. It is not always clear which idea is supported by good evidence.

You might hear about possible causes that we haven't included here. This is because there is no evidence about them or because the evidence is unclear.

Claims for Cancer Lawyer Atlanta Mesothelioma / Asbestos
Mesothelioma and Asbestos cancer are two diseases which are generally caused by exposure to the workplace. In short, some of the hardest workers in our country are tragically exposed to a set of dangerous fibers - asbestos. While these workers are working towards the American dream, they unconsciously expose themselves and their families to mesothelioma, a disease that has so far been incurable that has not formed for approximately 20 to 50 years.

If you or someone loved by you has developed mesothelioma, you are in medical care for your life. You deserve financial compensation. We at John Foy & Associates apologize for your struggle. We know that the only way we can help is by filing a personal injury claim or joining a class action lawsuit.

Types of Mesothelioma demands:

Personal injury lawsuit
- Submitted by the patient after receiving a diagnosis of mesothelioma.
- Asked companies (or companies) responsible for exposure to asbestos that causes disease.
- Special damage claims due to diseases caused by asbestos exposure.
- Allows patients to recover money for care, travel, loss of income, pain and suffering, and related costs.

False Death Suit
- Submitted by the family who survived after someone died of mesothelioma.
- Proposed to the company (or company) responsible for exposure to asbestos that causes death.
- Claiming specific damage related to an individual's death.
- Allow families to recover money related to medical bills, funeral fees, potential - lost income, loss of consortium, and related costs.
- Individual Lawsuits, Class Actions and Multidistric Litigation

Some people might wonder whether their mesothelioma cases will be handled individually, or as part of a mass lawsuit such as class action or can be called multidistric litigation. Your lawyer will tell you which type of claim is right for your specific situation.

Individual Claims - Usually this involves a single plaintiff who submits a lawsuit against the first or more companies because of an illness associated with their individual asbestos exposure. Each party submitted a motion & presented their evidence to the judge, which was finally resolved both when the two parties reached a settlement or the jury of the court reached a verdict.

Class Action Actions - Class actions involving a person or group of people who file a lawsuit on behalf of all people who "have the same location." Classes can consist of hundreds of millions of people, and each person can decide whether to remain part of class action or opt out. While class action has been put forward for years, most of the demands of asbestos are individuals or part of multidistric litigation.

Multidistrict Litigation (MDL) - This process allows people to submit individual claims using a process that regulates similar complaints and develops efficient procedural guidelines, allowing courts to handle more cases without merging all plaintiffs into one class. MDL handling major mesothelioma cases is MDL 875, In re: Asbestos Products Liability Litigation, which is managed by the Eastern Pennsylvania District of the United States District Court and which has included more than 186,000 cases since its inception in 2006.
